World Cerebral Palsy Day
In acknowledging the world Cerebral Palsy (CP) day, we take part by creating awareness about cerebral palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a neuro-motor disorder that affects the development of movement, muscle tone and posture. CP can limit the body’s ability to move in a coordinated and purposeful way. Those who are affected by cerebral palsy experience difficulty with body functions that involve motor skills and muscles, like breathing, bladder and bowel control, eating and talking. Occupational and Physical therapies are essential in managing Cerebral Palsy.
Occupational therapy plays an essential role in patients with Cerebral Palsy. OT helps to develop and recover the skills needed for independent everyday living such as eating, dressing, hygiene, as well as helping with motor movement skills. Occupational therapy increases independence, boosts confidence and self-esteem, and generally improve the quality of life. Other tasks occupational therapy can assist with includes: Grasping objects, opening door, writing, holding and reading books, playing, interacting with peers, school activities, sitting and standing.
Physiotherapy on the other hand helps to improve mobility for children with cerebral palsy. Physiotherapy uses strength and flexibility exercises, heat treatment, massages and special equipment to give children with cerebral palsy more independence.
