INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSON WITH DISABILITIES(IDPD)
”United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) for, with, and by persons with disabilities”.
Statistically, more than 1.3 billion people globally experience significant disability today. This represents 16% of the global population and is experiencing more limitations in everyday functioning than the rest of the population. Many persons with disabilities die earlier and are at increased risk of developing a range of health conditions according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is an annual event established on the 3rd of December 1992 by the United Nations to raise awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and to promote their full and equal participation in all aspects of society. One of the primary goals of IDPD is to break down barriers that hinder the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society. This includes physical barriers, such as inaccessible buildings and transportation, as well as societal barriers like discrimination and stigma. The day encourages us to reflect on the progress made and the work that still needs to be done to create a truly inclusive world. There is a need to continually promote inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities because People with disabilities do not need our pity, what they need is support and love. Nurturing children with disabilities require acceptance. A parent or caregiver must first accept the situation. For children living with disabilities, parental support and care are important. The care and support shown enable and propel the child to live above that limitation. Diagnosis does not define an individual, don’t get stuck on labels. If you want that child or individual to live above that limitation, your actions, utterances, and care are very crucial to them.
At Enability Occupational Therapy Centre, we promote advocacy by partnering with organizations and NGOs to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and take action to improve the lives of persons with disabilities while promoting early detection, celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of individuals with disabilities in society and giving hope for others too.
We also promote advocacy through the Enability Foundation which is a non-profit organization for raising awareness about people with disabilities. The Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of Enability Occupational Therapy with a vision to help people live independently, irrespective of limitation, disability, or deformity. At enability, distance is never a barrier because we are always available to answer all your questions and provide solutions both physically and digitally. By participating in International Day of Persons with Disabilities, it is a meaningful way to show support for the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities by supporting organizations with such visions.
