Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.
Going through trauma is not rare. About 6 of every 10 men, and 5 of every 10 women experience at least one trauma in their lives. PTSD can happen to anyone. It is not a sign of weakness.
Unfortunately, PTSD is quite common in children and teens. Children and teens could have PTSD if they have lived through an event that could have caused them or someone else to be killed or badly hurt. Studies show that about 15% – 43% of girls and 14% – 43% of boys go through at least one trauma and some develop PTSD. Everyone with PTSD needs to know that treatments really do work and can lead to a better quality of life!!!
It is important for anyone with PTSD to be treated by a mental health provider. Occupational therapists can effectively collaborate with psychologists or mental health professionals by focusing on function in the areas of self-care, leisure and productivity, stress relieve and rejoining in an occupational or daily routine task. And the physiotherapist aims to optimize wellbeing and empower the individual by promoting functional movement, movement awareness, physical activity and exercises, bringing together physical and mental aspects.
